You may have noticed that, although I’m writing about week 2, it’s been more than a week since my ‘week 1’ post.
This is because, in terms of weeks, I’m referring to John Thornhill’s Partnership to Success Programme, which is set out in a ‘week by week’ completion format. I’m hoping to play catch up – and even overtake – the week I ‘should’ be on, according to the programme.
Just to tell you where I’m at, I ‘should’ be on week 11 and here I am blogging about week 2. I actually finished week 3’s tasks last week (in a day) so I’m even farther behind in my blogging that I am with the programme!
So, week 2 was all about installing OptimizePress, an internet marketing tool which works with WordPress. The training also went through installing various plugins, adding an ‘About Me’ page and reading a pdf ebook called The Blogger’s Roadmap.
The biggest mental barriers for me this week? Rabbit holes.
In other words, it was very tempting to spend hours learning more than I needed to about all these new tools and plugins, instead of sticking to the basics needed to complete week 2 of the programme. Also there was information in the ebook which contradicted John’s advice in his videos.
In the end I talked to a mentor about it – and he reminded me that I was following a step-by-step programme and that I should stick with John’s advice and just do the basics he suggests to do. After all, he’s very successful at what he does.
So that’s what I did.
Which leads me to a recommendation – find yourself a mentor. This doesn’t have to be an expert in what you’re trying to do; it just needs to be someone who is positive, motivating, encouraging and genuinely wants you to succeed. Sometimes I’ve sent a question over to my mentor on Skype and, just by doing that, the answer became clear to me without him even replying.
And/or you can just find a forum in your chosen subject, where you can ask questions to the group, who may have more knowledge and experience than you. Remember, we’re all in this together and most people are more than happy to offer their support.
